Southampton Repair Cafe happens on the 1st Saturday of every month (except January).
Our next event is at Freemantle URC church hall, 257 Shirley Rd, Southampton, SO15 3HS on 7th July from 10.30am-13.00pm.
After that we will be at Freemantle URC on 4th August, 1st September, 6th October (our 4th Birthday!!), 3rd November and 1st December.
All cafes have our regular repairers for portable electrical, sewing, jewellery, computer and bike repairs and more. Come and join us for a cuppa and home made cakes even if you dont have anything to repair!
Our trial repair cafe in St Denys was a great success and we would like to make this a regular event every 2 months. But to do this we need more helpers – especially people who can do sewing repairs! We are also looking for more bike repairers (there is the possibility of free training) and general helpers to look after the reception desk and help match customers to repairers. Please get in touch if you can help.
Since we opened in 2014 members of the public have brought nearly 1000 bikes, clothes, electrical goods, computers, jewellery, furniture and other goods to be glue, nailed or otherwise repaired. Not everything can be repaired (our success rate is around 80%) but even when something can’t be fixed, visitors are grateful for the advice our talented repairers can give.
Our most popular repairs are to electrical goods (40%) followed by sewing (20%), then bikes and jewellery (both 15%). The remaining 10% is made up of everything else. Around 30% of our visitors come back to a future cafe with further items for repair.
We are following the model begun in Holland (see http://repaircafe.org (http://repaircafe.org/) for how they work), and the Malvern Hills Repair Café which we have visited, (seehttps://www.facebook.com/#!/MalvernHillsRepairCafe (https://www.facebook.com/#%21/MalvernHillsRepairCafe)).
